  Madaba & Mount Nebo

Set amid fertile, gently undulatingplains to the south of Amman is Madaba, the city of mosaics. Across the town, in churches, museums and private houses, dozens of elaborate 6th and 7th Century Byzantine mosaics are on display, depicting both Biblical tales and the region’s history. The most astonishing of these is the map of the Holy Land, laid out on the floor of the Church of St George, but more complete examples can be found in the town’s Archeological Park. A mosaic school is now helping to keep the traditional alive, with accurate copies of the main motifs on sale in the abundant souvenir shops.

To the west of Madaba is Mount Nebo, the scene of God’s revelation of the Promised Land to Moses. It was certainly well chosen, with yawning views across the Dead Sea to Jerusalem and Jericho, while an active monastery, a new museum and a church undergoing restoration amplify the site’s religious significance.
